Having failed to defend his national under-19 title three weeks ago, Duncan Croudis (Otago) is now well and truly on the rebound, winning three of the last four Otago trial events.

Croudis ended the drought by winning the senior gross at the Wanaka tournament a week ago and then continued his run with a fine 67 in the men's trial on Saturday morning at St Clair.

Afternoon play was cancelled because of snow, giving the 18-year-old a four-shot lead over Andrew Hobbs, Brent McEwan (both St Clair) and Michael Smith (Otago).

On Sunday, Croudis continued his winning form, scoring 75 and 70 in tough, windy conditions to win the senior gross in the annual Chisholm Park tournament.

He finished one shot ahead of masters (over 40) triallist Ken Shaw (Taieri), with McEwan two shots further back.

McEwan took first blood at North Otago, but now that Croudis has notched three quick wins, the battle for the No 1 berth in the Otago team is heating up.

This year's trial series continues with the Taieri Classic this weekend, which will be played over 72 holes.

The selectors will then name a 10-man Otago senior team, an eight-man masters (over 40) team and an under-21 team for the triangular tournament at St Clair on October 9-10.
