Golf: Financial problems force club to restructure

The St Clair Golf Club is making a change off the course in response to financial struggles.

St Clair Golf Club board of management chairman Steve Brocklebank said the club was facing tough financial times and that had led to club general manager Paul Barlow leaving.

The job of general manager had been restructured to a part-time role and Barlow had been asked to apply but had declined.

He said Barlow's role, which he held for 14 years, would be split between the remaining members on staff, while the board would also play some part in the role.

There was still a professional and an assistant, a part-time administrator, and two permanent ground staff working at the club.

Brocklebank said it had been a tough decision to make some changes but something had to be done. Barlow had worked hard for the club over the years and he would be missed, Brocklebank said.

Four new members had been elected to the board last year under a new voting structure.

The club had made a loss of just under $20,000 last year and was heading for much the same again unless changes were made, he said.

There were about 500 members at the golf club with an increase of nine members last year.

Brocklebank said golf clubs were struggling across the board. He had been at a golf meeting recently and the other clubs there were facing similar economic problems.
