Golf: John McGlashan dazzles at schools tournament

It must have been the dazzling green pants.

John McGlashan College, which featured in the Otago Daily Times recently, showing off some spectacular custom-made uniforms, has won the overall teams title at the World Schools Golf Challenge in Thailand.

The Dunedin school's top team posted a net score of 858 over eight rounds at four different courses.

McGlashan finished six shots clear of the American School of Bangkok. Hilton College (South Africa) was a further eight shots back.

On the gross, McGlashan's 979 was 10th overall.

The team score was based on the performance of four golfers (best three scores at each course counting). Carter Milne, Ryan Whelan, Luke Davis-Rae and Tom Sycamore contributed for McGlashan.

McGlashan's other four golfers - Sam Sheard, Jordan Gain, Hayden Coutts and Nick Kennedy - combined for 15th, with a net 905.

Milne and Whelan each carded a score of 283 (eight rounds, best score on each course counting) to finish tied for second in the boys third division, just two shots behind the winner.

Sycamore was 13th and Davis-Rae 16th.

Sheard was the leading McGlashan golfer in the fourth division, finishing seventh with a net 293. Coutts was 10th, Gain 14th and Kennedy 19th.

Coach Shelley Duncan said the boys played well and enjoyed the tournament, which was held at the Palm Hills, Black Mountain, Banyan and Springfield courses.

It is the fourth year of the World Schools Golf Challenge, which is open to any school eager to taste international competition and experience golf conditions in another country.
