Brent McEwan left Dunedin yesterday to compete in the South Beach international amateur championship in Miami, Florida.

McEwan received an invitation to compete in the event two months ago. It was most likely a result of his performance in the Southland Invitational last March, when he blitzed the field to take individual honours.

The trip is not funded but McEwan has the support of some Golf Otago backing, having won the province's order of merit title for the last two years.

Money was also given to Golf Otago to assist McEwan after the St Clair Club ran a substantial raffle, which was well supported by club members, for a Chris Idour-crafted necklace.

McEwan has had a busy schedule, as he spent last week in Auckland playing at No 1 for Otago in the national men's interprovincial on the North Shore course.

He did not have his usual 50% or better record this year, which he put down to slow starts.

''I was disappointed with the way I played but was delighted that the younger players stepped up to get us through to the playoffs,'' he said.

''Playing at No 1, I can't afford to start poorly, as it is really tough getting back into the game against New Zealand's top players.

''I have worked this week but have done quite a bit of practice and have discovered that I need to be more stable. I have tightened my swing and I feel much better and I am looking forward to competing in Florida.''

McEwan returns to Dunedin on Christmas morning in time to celebrate the festive season with partner Shannon Lobb and 14-month-old son Jordan.
