Otago women's golf has been given a boost with the acquisition of top Southland player Lisa Henderson, who has a wealth of experience.

Henderson has resigned from the Invercargill Golf Club and moved to Dunedin this week, joining the Otago Golf Club.

She played at No 2 for Southland against Otago at Balmacewen on Sunday and, although Otago won 12-4, she was unbeaten, heading Monica Tulisi 3 and 1 and halving with Shani Arona.

Henderson has represented Southland at No 1, No 2 and No 3 in the national interprovincial team tournament 21 times since making her debut as a 17-year-old at Balmacewen in 1987.

She has a fine record on the Southland scene, having won the Southland championships in 2000 and 2002, the Southland strokeplay in 2004 and 2008 and the new Southland seeded matchplay tournament in 2008.

Sporting a handicap index of 2.7, she is at present displaying some of the best form of her career.

Otago women's golf has seen a resurgence in the past 12 months, with the top team finishing seventh in the national team event last year after spending four years at the bottom of the table.

Gaining Henderson should help Otago continue this trend and possibly aim for a higher place on the Miramar course in Wellington in December.

Shifting provinces means that Henderson will face a three-month stand-down period but that will be of little consequence as the next event is the quadrangular tournament, which is likely to be played in October.
