Golf: Otago juniors impress

Otago's best under-19 and under-16 golfers posted two impressive wins in the Junior Toro tournament in Cambridge yesterday.

All Otago players were unbeaten in a 6 to 2 win over Hawkes Bay in the morning but, much to the surprise of many spectators, Otago romped home over an unbeaten Auckland team, winning seven of the eight matches in the afternoon.

The win cost Auckland any chance of winning the event and the benefactor, North Harbour, will now meet the defending Bay of Plenty octet in the final this morning.

After a slow start, Otago finished with three wins from five outings and will play off against Northland for fifth and sixth places this morning.

It was a long day at the office, with four matches against Hawkes Bay going the full distance and finishing all square in the morning.

Queenstown's Jack Turner made his debut for the team and finished the day with two impressive wins at the expense of Bay's Thomas Alderson and Andrew Meng (Auckland).

Sungwoo Han (No 1), Harry Smith (No 4) and Inia Logan (No 6) also emerged with two wins for the day.

Cody McMullan (No 3), Connor Ross (No 5) and Terry Kim (No 8) all featured with a win and a half each to remain unbeaten.

Otago finished third in section two and will be well tested by section one bronze medallist Northland in the final contest this morning.
