Golf: Tight at the top after round two

There is a logjam at the top of the points table after the second round of the Metropolitan Pennants was played at St Clair and Balmacewen on Saturday.

Chisholm Park, St Clair, North Otago and Otago share the lead, with one win and three points each from the two rounds.

Chisholm Park and St Clair hold the whip hand with 6.5 games each, but the one to watch after the first two rounds is Otago Blue.

The top Balmacewen sextet has a game in hand and shares the points lead, while trailing by only half a game after beating Otago Gold 60 on Saturday.

Defending champion St Clair was out to avenge the first-round loss in Oamaru and was never threatened, with three St Clair players winning in 13 holes.

Chris Snow beat Antony McCullough on the 13th green, while St Clair No 4 Stephen Hitchcox was 4-under-par when his match finished against Kyle Geary by the same margin.

Clayton More beat Chisholm junior Cody McMullan 6 and 5, which gave the home team three early wins.

But Conor Jamison and Phil Bungard had other ideas, notching two wins for the Park team.

The decider was the battle between the No 1 players, with Otago's top player edging home over Mark collie despite a rare shank on the par-3 fourth hole.

At Balmacewen, the middle order of Moxy Smith and Tyrone Ratahi finished under par to give their team two important wins. Brandon Hodgson and Jamie Anstiss won the two battles, while Otago Gold was on the back foot when Luke Murdoch turned eight up on former North Otago golfer Kris Rush.

Rush improved on the back nine to reduce the winning margin but Otago Blue put the icing on the cake in the No 6 clash.

Gold's Murray Edgar was four up after eight holes but Daniel Barnett finished strongly to come from behind and win on the 17th green.
