Golf: Winning return

Brandon Hodgson returned to competitive golf in style on Saturday, winning the Central Otago men's championship in a sudden-death play off with Mitch Bosley (Wanaka).

The Balmacewen golfer was a member of the Otago quintet which played in the Toro interprovincial in Dunedin last December but was ruled out of the SBS team with a back injury last month.

Hodgson and Bosley were tied after 36 holes, both scoring two par rounds of 70 for a 140 total, six shots clear of Phil Bungard (professional), who is eagerly awaiting the return of his amateur status in September.

Junior honours went to Jamie Anstiss (Queenstown) with 144 (75 and 69), five shots ahead of Dylan Stock (Otago).

Inia Logan took the under-16 title with a two-round aggregate of 147 and a 10-shot lead over second-placed Ben Harford (Queenstown). Logan (14) carded a two-under-par 68 in the afternoon for the lowest score in the 80-strong field.

Queenstown's Joshua Bailey took the under-14 title and Bill Grant (Queenstown) was the best in the golden oldies' section, with two rounds of 80.
