The New Zealand Open, to be played in Queenstown next month, has entered into an agreement with the Asian Tour.

The agreement will lead to 10 Asian Tour members competing, and the figure may expand next year.

The tournament will also be broadcast live on the Asian Tour's global television platform to a potential 750 million homes across the world.

The parties, including the sanctioning tour, the PGA Tour of Australasia, have also agreed to discuss sanctioning arrangements for the following two years. Such sanctioning would likely feature more Asian Tour players playing in the field and earnings from the event counting towards the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

New Zealand Open tournament chairman John Hart said he was delighted to enter into the partnership.

``From the outset we have set about to create a unique golf event that will ultimately be recognised as the pre-eminent pro-am tournament in the Asia-Pacific region, and this connection to the Asian Tour is another important step in us achieving that aim,'' he said.

It will be the first time the Asian Tour will have visited New Zealand.

The tournament is on from March 9-12 at Millbrook and the Hills.
