Otago Boys' through to intercollegiate final

Otago Boys' High School qualified for the national intercollegiate final in Palmerston North in October after beating Southland Boys' High School by 32 shots at Balmacewen yesterday.

The Dunedin school finished on a team tally of 228 with Joseph Hancock on 74, Parker Aluesi on 76 and Jed Cuthbertson on 78.

In sharp contrast, all of the Invercargill scores were above 80, leaving Otago Boys' to coast home in the contest.

For the past 15 years, one school from each province has attended the national final but, under new rules, only one team from the southern region can attend.

Winning yesterday also allows the Dunedin boys to compete in the national under-19 championships, also in Palmerston North.

Otago Boys' won the Otago intercollegiate final when beating Wakatipu High by five shots at Roxburgh in March.

OBHS No4 Tom Wilson was given a severe golfing lesson early in his round, incurring a four-stroke penalty for carrying 15 clubs in his bag.

Otago Boys' won the national title in 1991 and 1993 and qualified to compete in the world final at St Andrews in Scotland in 1992 and 1994.
