Otago juniors left stranded

A strong North Harbour team will play the local Waikato octet in the final of the national junior interprovincial tournament on the Cambridge golf course this morning.

North Harbour beat the highly rated Bay of Plenty team by a record 8-0  margin to decide the winner of section A.

Mixed results in section B led to a three-way tie between Waikato, Auckland and Canterbury, with the home team making the final on a countback of games.

A swamped Cambridge course resulted in the abandonment of round four  which cost Otago any chance of getting further up than third in section A.

Canterbury also lost any chance of winning section B.

The playoff for fifth and sixth is a repeat of last year’s final, with Otago playing Canterbury this morning.

Otago beat Manawatu-Wanganui 5 to 3 in the final section round yesterday afternoon in a closer-than-expected match.

Inia Logan beat Greg Shaw in 16 holes, and  No2 Jakob Bleach continued to impress with a resounding 7 and 6 win over Liam Finlayson.

Connor Ross (No3) finished well to down Campbell McHugh after leading for most of the round.

At No4,  Jack Turner is the only unbeaten Otago player with three wins and a-half, beating Fergus Smith by 3 and 2 yesterday.

Jonny Mackay (No5)  incurred  his first loss of the week, going down to Jamie Connell by 4 and 3 and he now has a 75% winning record.

Once again the under-16 trio struggled, with only Liam Judkins (No8) posting a 4 and 3 win at the expense of Manawatu’s Sam Smith.
