The Otago women’s team beat Southland to win the Salisbury Cup 9.5-6.5 in cold, windy and wet conditions on the St Clair course yesterday.

Otago edged ahead in the morning round with four wins and a half and finished in front with four wins and two halves in the afternoon singles round.

The top two Otago players, Abigael Crawford and Susan Greig, notched two wins each, while Otago No6 Tracey Storer also showed her match-play ability with two wins.

Otago No4 Brenda Sutherland was unbeaten, with halves in the reverse singles and singles rounds.

Some Otago players showed grit in the morning round. Crawford was 3-up at the turn before losing four in a row to Olivia Frost.

But she grafted on the final five holes, winning by a margin of one on the final green.

Storer and Eleanor Newton also displayed fight, both finishing with close wins on the final green to put Otago in front.

In the afternoon, Crawford and Greig posted good wins over their Southland opponents while Storer romped home with a 6 and 5 win over Bronwyn O’Brien.

No4 Joanna Booker followed he morning loss with a win on the 16th green, while Sutherland and Becky Slade notched halves.

The scheduling of this event must be changed in 2019, as this year it clashed with the Charles Tour event on the Harewood course in Christchurch.

This event is the only top Charles event in the South Island, and the clash led  Laura Hoskin and Danielle Bailey to miss the Southland match.
