Getting the ball in the hole will still be the same.

Just getting it out of the hole will be slightly different.

The Otago Golf Club has come up with a novel way of stopping players picking up the flag when getting their ball out of the hole on the green.

Guidelines introduced by New Zealand Golf last week in response to the Covid-19 outbreak asked players not to remove the pin when putting while the pins had been removed from the putting green.

Otago Golf Club director of golf Shelley Duncan said the club had come up with the idea of putting a section of nylon pipe into the hole. It stops the ball just below the lip.

That means the golfers do not have to even consider getting the flag out as they can easily grab the ball.

Duncan said the idea had proved very popular with club members and had been supported by all who had played throughout the weekend.

Duncan said golf was one of the few sports which was continuing despite the Covid-19 outbreak.

She said there had been good numbers of players on the course last week and though the weather had made it tough on Saturday, members and others were out playing on the course over the weekend.

She said as long as people followed social distancing guidelines and kept clean then golf was a good option.

How long the club house would remain open was up in the air.

Other guidelines advised by Golf NZ last week was a 10-minute interval between tee times, the closure of drinking fountains and bunker rakes removed.
