Otago started with two losses on the first day of competition in the women's national interprovincial which began on the Westown course in New Plymouth yesterday.

Otago was beaten 3-2 by Aorangi in the morning and was outclassed 4-1 by a strong Canterbury quintet in the afternoon.

Otago No1 Abigael Crawford overhit some of the greens against Ginny Bolderston, turning 3-down before winning the 10th and losing 11 and 12 to trail by four.

She won the 13th but was dormie 3-down and went one hole further, winning the 16th before losing on the penultimate green.

In the afternoon, highly rated Canterbury No1 Amelia Garvey made four birdies on the front nine to lead by four.

Crawford's fightback came to an abrupt end when she went out of bounds on the 15th hole, losing 5 and 3.

No2 Jo Hicks-Beach had a resounding win over Aorangi's Sharon Bradford with three birdies helping her turn 8-up on her way to a 9 and 7 win.

But this was no preparation for her afternoon match when she went down in 15 holes to Juliana Hung.

No3 Annabel Evans could not repeat the form she showed in the South Island event and lost her morning match to Aorangi's Jessica Shearer.

Evans performed much better in the afternoon after trailing by two after four holes before winning the fifth with a par-3 and the eighth with a birdie-3.

She birdied the 16th to be one behind with two holes to play but lost the last hole for a two-hole defeat.

No4 Rachel Lissaman turned two behind Aorangi's Kathryn Baker and lost 11 and 14, coming home to be dormie 4-down.

Lissaman managed a half at the 15th but this was not sufficient and she lost 4 and 3.

In the afternoon, she had putting woes against Catherine Bell who showed no mercy taking the honours on the 11th green.

No5 Susan Greig had two wins, beating Jenny Kellahan 4 and 3 in the morning after winning the fifth and seventh with birdies to turn 3-up.

She won the 11th but three-putted at the 12th before making another birdie on the 13th and halving the last two holes for a 4 and 3 win.

In the afternoon, Canterbury's Jasmine Rou was a tougher opponent and the pair halved the first five holes.

Greig turned one ahead and parred the 10th to go two ahead before winning the 12th to lead by three.

She lost 16 to a par-3 but exacted revenge for her South Island loss when the match finished on the 17th green.

Otago has a tough task today and will be keen to get some points on the board against Waikato this morning and Auckland this afternoon.
