Waikato won its third national junior men’s interprovincial title in a nail-biting finish over North Harbour at the Cambridge course yesterday.
The match, which ended at 4.5-3.5, was close all the way with Waikato having four wins to Harbour’s two and both Harbour golfers 1-up playing the final hole.
Waikato No2 Jordan Woodall won the final hole, beating Kevin Koong with a par four, to give the local team the title.
After receiving an 8-0 drubbing at the hands of North Harbour on Thursday, the strong Bay of Plenty team came out firing against Auckland in the playoff for third.
The match was evenly poised at the turn but Auckland finished strongly to take the honours with four wins and a half.
The playoff for fifth and sixth was a repeat of last year’s final but this time Otago went down to Canterbury.
The match was tight throughout the front nine but Canterbury performed better on the homeward run.
No1 Inia Logan won four out of five during the event beating Dominic Brettkelly 4 and 2.
Jakob Bleach has showed excellent form but succumbed to Tom Parker’s red-hot putter, losing for the second time 3 and 2.
No3 captain Connor Ross once again showing a mature temperament at the death to graft out a half with Hiroki Miya .
Jack Turner went into the final match unbeaten but did not show his best form yesterday losing to long-hitting Marcel Boet on the 15th green.
Jonny Mackay from Oamaru had a good week but suffered his second loss on the final green.
The under-16 trio performed much better in close games with Joseph Hancock coming back from three down and halving with Kazuma Kobori on the final green.
