Ice hockey: Wakatipu continues winning way

Wakatipu High School made it twice on ice with a 5-0 win against Christchurch Boys High School in the final of the South Island secondary schools tournament at the Dunedin Ice Stadium yesterday.

It was the Queenstown school's second consecutive win in the tournament.

Connor Harrison was the goal-scoring hero for Wakatipu, netting four times in his team's big win.

Mitchell Frear added a goal as Wakatipu led 1-0 after the first 15min period and 4-0 after the second.

Wakatipu progressed to the final with a crushing 14-0 win over Gore-St Peters in the semifinals, while Christchurch Boys beat neighbour St Andrews 4-1.

St Andrews claimed third in the tournament with a convincing 9-3 win against Gore-St Peters, while Dunstan-Cromwell beat Kings-Bayfield 7-2 in the play-off for fifth and sixth.

Harrison and Frear were the leading scorers at the tournament, while MVP awards were made to goaltender Aston Brookes (Wakatipu), defenceman Lachlan Frear (Invitation) and forward Chris Dale (Gore-St Peters).
