Stampede still manages win

An end-of-period brawl last week left the Stampede short of players for its match against the Canterbury Red Devils last night, but it still managed to beat the visiting team 13-7.

Four players from the Queenstown-based side received suspensions after a fight during last weekend’s match against the West Auckland Admirals. The fight happened at the end of the second quarter after an altercation between Admirals goaltender Csaba Kercso-Magos and the Stampede’s Colin McIntosh.

McIntosh received a match penalty plus a two-game suspension for spearing.

Meanwhile, Braden Lee, Hayden Argyle and Connor Harrison received a match penalty and one-game suspension for fighting.

The Admirals also lost four players, the most serious being Andrew Hart’s three-match suspension for a check to the head and neck.

New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation disciplinary co-ordinator Chris Watson took several days to decide the sanction.

Under IIHF rules, players are given a one-game suspension for fighting in a game.

The Stampede plays the Red Devils again tonight and will have all  players except McIntosh back.

The Dunedin Thunder is  in Auckland, playing the Botany Swarm tonight and tomorrow.
