Netball: Leaver gets NZ trial

Six Southern Steel players have been selected to trial for the Silver Ferns and New Zealand A for pre-World Cup matches.

The trials will be held in Auckland on June 29 and July 2, the same day the teams will be named.

Promising Steel defenders Storm Purvis and Phoenix Karaka, midcourters Gina Crampton and Shannon Francois, and shooters Te Paea Selby-Rickit and Brooke Leaver have all made the 30-strong group of trialists.

Given her limited court-time, Leaver is perhaps the biggest surprise among the Steel players selected, but she has impressed in the limited opportunities she has been given this season.

Crampton, who had not started an ANZ Championship match before this season, has flourished at wing attack, and her future appears to be bright.

Selby-Rickit has also looked sharp filling the void left by the departure of former Steel captain Jodi Brown, who now plays for the Pulse.

Karaka and Purvis have been dynamite defensively this year, and it is no surprise they have been named to trial.

The same goes for Francois, who could play at centre if she makes the Silver Ferns, pushing incumbent Laura Langman to wing defence.

The Silver Ferns will host Fiji in a one-off test in Porirua in July, followed by a two-test series against South Africa in Hamilton and Auckland.
