Netball: Promising entry numbers for Masters Games

Two former Silver Ferns captains, Belinda Colling and Anna Stanley (nee Rowberry), will be in action with the Slebers netball team at next year's New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin.

It is a team of stars with Tania Dalton, another Silver Fern, included.

The rest of the team have played netball to a high level.

Their name gives them away to start with.

Slebers is Rebels spelt backwards and the team also includes Jo Morrison, Katie Snyman, Nova Robinson, Camille O'Connor and Kelly Hutton.

At the early bird cut-off date, 92 netball teams had entered for the ACC New Zealand Masters Games.

This is already a record for both the Dunedin and Wanganui events.

"Entry age for netball was 30 and so many top players and ex-top players could enter," New Zealand Masters Games manager Aaron Joy said.

"We have great facilities here for netball so it makes it a great tournament and everyone enjoys themselves, whether they are competitive or not."

Team member Belinda Colling said they had entered to stay active and escape from their children for the week.

"Most of us went through the University of Otago and we have fond memories of the great days we spent in Dunedin," Colling said from her home in Central Otago.

"We all love playing netball and there may still be a competitive spark in us."

Early bird entries have closed and the numbers registered at the end of counting yesterday was 4149.

This is 151 more than at the corresponding time two years ago.

"Two years ago, 2500 entered for the Games in January and 500 in the last few days after the village had been set up at the University of Otago campus," Joy said.

If the pattern continued over the next two months the total entries would beat the 2008 Games figure of 7029.

The record for a Masters Games in Dunedin is 8000 set in 2002.

Team entries close on January 9.
