Netball: Southern's class shows in demolition of Phys Ed

The Dunedin premier competition started on Saturday at the Edgar Centre with all of the top sides sporting new players.

A new-look Phys Ed A team faced a tough challenge when it come up against a Southern A team overflowing with Otago and Otago age-group players, including Gina Crampton, Miaana Waldren, Kate Shearer and Emma Kirkpatrick.

The class of Southern A showed from the first whistle, with Southern winning the match easily 83-30.

Southern A's Shearer played goal attack for the first half and then wing attack in the second half. She cut open the circle and dominated in the midcourt.

Her ability to create opportunities for her side played a large part in the 48-12 halftime score.

Southern's strong and fast attack play often meant Phys Ed was playing catch-up. Southern often took only three passes from the goal keep to the goal shoot.

Its defence started right from the shooters and this caused Phys Ed players to struggle to make headway and frequently enabled Southern to create the intercept and quickly turn from defence to attack.

Phys Ed A, on the other hand, looked to be blooding new players and giving them all valuable court time.

Phys Ed showed glimpses of the potential it has and, once it gels, it will be a competitive side.

Phys Ed captain Alice Conrad led from the front and, playing the final quarter at wing attack, helped her team come within in two goals of Southern for a quarter score of 13-11.

In other matches, Uni-Albion A beat Phys Ed B 54-43 and College A downed Columba Snr A 65-22.
