Columba College grabbed regional bragging rights with a 22-16 win over Taieri College in the final of the Otago secondary school championships yesterday.

The match was closer than the eight-goal margin suggests with Columba only pulling away in he final quarter, thanks largely to superior shooting from Bridget Thayer and Alice Brown.

Thayer shot the perfect game, dropping in all eight of her attempts, and team-mate Brown scored 14 of her 19 shots from goal attack.

Taieri managed four more shots on goal but its shooting combination of Kara Omerovic (five from 11) and Ashlee Norman (11 from 20) was not as accurate.

Columba goal keep Zoe Cadzow did a good job guarding the ball and utilised her height to snaffle rebounds.

The Columba side also had the advantage of being coached by New Zealand Under-21 and former Rebels coach Janine Southby.

Fifty-four schools and more than 600 pupils competed in the two-day tournament.

Cromwell College beat Catlins Area School 20-12 in the senior B final, St Hildas Collegiate beat unstan 21-14 in the intermediate category, and the same schools contested the junior final with St Hildas prevailing 26-18.
