Netball: Wilkins right for opener

Donna Wilkins has cast aside her sling and will take her place in the Southern Steel squad for its opening game against the Central Pulse in Invercargill today.

The former Silver Ferns shooter broke her wrist during a pre-season match in Queenstown in February and was in doubt for the ANZ Championship match today.

But Wilkins' injury has mended quicker than anticipated and she will be court side for the clash, coach Robyn Broughton said.

"Donna's feeling good and the wrist seems fine," she said.

"She trained with us and gave it a good workout and there didn't seem to be any problems at all."

As for whether Wilkins is match fit or not, Broughton responded: "Well, the only way to get game fitness is to play a game, so I suppose it's up to me whether I think she'll be ready."

The match will feature the return of former Silver Ferns captain Adine Wilson.

Wilson sat last season out while starting a family.

The wing attack formed a formidable combination with Wilkins when the pair played together with the Sting.

Their recruitment this season has fans in the South excited about the team's play-off prospects.

The Pulse, on the other hand, has the look of a development team with six New Zealand under-21 squad members in the squad.

Only three players - Jamilah Gupwell, Cushla Lichtwark and Neesha Wieser - remain from last year.

Jamaican defender Althea Byfield and Silver Ferns shooter Paula Griffin will carry the hopes of the inexperienced Wellington-based side.

The Pulse almost upset the Steel in round two in 2008 but was beaten 52-50 in extra time, and later in the season lost 41-29.

However, with so many changes to the Pulse those results are irrelevant.

The Otago Development team will play Southland in Invercargill tomorrow.

Both sides are undefeated in the Lois Muir Challenge.

Otago won the inaugural competition last year.
