Both southern teams will place in the top eight at the New Zealand under-18 championships in Rotorua.
Dunedin and Invercargill will play each other this morning, the winner to enter the fifth-sixth playoff and the loser heading for the seventh-eighth game.
‘‘It’s a bit of a shame one team will knock the other one down a spot, but it should be fun,’’ Otago coach Jodi Brown said last night.
The teams know each other well, and have already met in warm-up games for the tournament.
Brown suspected it had been ‘‘quite some time’’ since both southern teams made the top eight.
Dunedin’s super week continued with a 40-14 thumping of Taranaki in the first playoff round yesterday morning. But a rough second quarter in the afternoon game led to a 30-20 loss to Hamilton City A.
Invercargill had a 29-20 win over Tauranga in the morning before losing 26-14 to Wellington Black in the afternoon.
