The Southern Steel is set to bring a pre-season weekend to Dunedin.

It will face the Mainland Tactix in a double-header on March 4-5. The two sides' Beko League teams will also square off on each day.

They will be played on the wooden courts outside the main arena at the Edgar Centre, as the arena is already booked out. The matches are in addition to the two ANZ Premiership matches the team will play in the city.

''We considered a couple of options for where to have the pre-season and I'm just so pleased to bring it to Dunedin actually,'' Steel chief executive Lana Winders said.

A trade show had hired out the main arena.

The matches will be held at 11am and 2pm on both days. The Beko League teams will play the early game on the Saturday and the Steel plays the early game on the Sunday.

There will be seating for about 200 people with temporary stands be put up around the court.

The weekend looks to be a busy sporting one for Dunedin. The Highlanders will play the Crusaders on the Saturday, while an Otago men's basketball team hosts the Southland Sharks on the Sunday.

It is expected a near full-strength line-up will be available for the Steel. Shannon Francois will miss the Saturday game due to a wedding, but will possibly be back for the Sunday.

The pre-season game against the Tactix is a regular one, with the teams last year meeting in Ashburton.

It is one of three major pre-season dates for the Steel this year. The team will head to Australia to play Noeline Taurua's Sunshine Coast Lightning on February 10 and February 12. It will also play in a tournament in Otaki with the other New Zealand teams on March 10-12.

After getting back from Australia the squad is planning to head to Queenstown and Wanaka.

''We're just getting amongst it with the communities up there and making our presence felt,'' Winders said.

''We're opening up our trainings to coaches and players to come along and watch and just getting the girls interacting with the girls up there.''

The season starts on March 26 against the Northern Stars in Auckland.
