Premier competition reaches key juncture

Now we wait.

Round one of the Dunedin premier A club competition wrapped up on Thursday night and there will be a shake-up next round after promotion-relegation games.

South Pacific Titans Taiko and University Albion B sit at the bottom of the premier A table and will meet two premier B teams on Monday night.

Premier B teams St Hilda’s Collegiate A and Uni Albion C — who play each other today — and College B are all in contention for promotion.

Premier A games were played on Thursday night to free up space for the Southern Steel and Southern Blast games in Dunedin this afternoon.

Uni Albion A remain firmly at the top of the table unbeaten after a 64-36 win over Physed A.

College A had a tight battle against Columba College for the first half, but a mammoth 24-8 final quarter set them up for a 73-47 victory.

Titans Titi beat clubmates Titans Taiko 59-51 in a hard-fought clash, and Southern Magpies held on for a 44-40 victory over Uni Albion B.

Southern set the platform in the opening quarter, which helped them withstand a dogged fight back from Uni Albion B.

They jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, shutting down the supply of ball to shooter Bridget O’Malley, and Southern held a 12-6 lead at the break.

Uni Albion produced a much better second quarter, working as a more cohesive unit and backing each other up.

Brooke Tongia, who shot 17 from 21, moved into goal attack and opened up nice space for her attack end, allowing her midcourters to come into the game more.

They won the second quarter 12-9 and trailed 21-18 at halftime.

Uni Albion midcourters used the width of the court and punched the middle channel, opening up depth to hit the circle edge and put some nice ball into their shooters.

But Southern maintained their composure and played patient netball through court as they worked their way through the zone.

Wing attack Ellie Walker re-offered and hit the circle edge hard, and shooters Genevieve Taua and Freya Wilson, who shot 31 from 36, worked nicely together in the circle.

Southern lifted their defensive pressure to another level, but Uni Albion drew level in the third quarter before Southern pulled away to lead 33-30 at the break.
