Olympic freeskier Beau-James Wells, from Wanaka, is retiring from competitive skiing to get behind the camera.

Wells (25) is moving into filming the sport he loves.

"After 11 years of skiing halfpipe competitively, I’m really pumped to be moving into filming," he said.

The two-time Winter Olympian has represented New Zealand at prestigious global freeski events since he was 15.

As the third of the four Wells brothers, a surname synonymous with success in the freeski world, Beau-James grew up living and breathing skiing.

Snow Sports New Zealand head coach Tom Willmott described him as "one of our most successful freeski athletes”.

Wells is a Dew Tour medallist, two-time junior world champion, two-time Olympian across two disciplines, placing fourth in freeski halfpipe in PyeongChang (2018), sixth in freeski halfpipe and 21st in freeski slopestyle in Sochi (2014), has had numerous Winter X-Games appearances and competed in 27 Freeski World Cups.

Wells was the flagbearer for team New Zealand at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games and played a key role in the development of the athlete voice at Snow Sports New Zealand as the inaugural chairman of the senior athlete leadership team.

He has also been a representative on the New Zealand Olympic Committee’s athletes’ commission.

He is also an NZOC Olympic ambassador, visiting schools throughout New Zealand to talk about the Olympics and inspire young New Zealanders.
