Athletics: World record not enough for Yuseinov

Bulgarian discus thrower Mustafa Yuseinov set a world record only to finish third in his event at the IPC world athletics championships in Christchurch yesterday.

He collected the bronze medal in the F54/55/56 after Cuban Leonardo Diaz and Serbia's Drazenko Mitrovic produced even better efforts.

Diaz shattered his own world record by 3m in throwing 43.10m while Mitrovic took silver with 31.35m and Yuseinov had to content himself with a bronze for his effort of 39.42m.

Two other world records were set yesterday, lifting the championships haul to 47.

Birgit Kober, of Germany, set a new world mark of 23.54m in the F33/34/52/53 javelin, eclipsing the old mark by an incredible 9m.

Ireland's Michael McKillop celebrated his 21st birthday in style with a gold medal and new world record in the men's 800m T37 when he posted a time of one minute 58.90 seconds.
