Dodgers have  avenged last week’s loss in Dunedin premier men’s club softball.

Having already secured top spot on the table heading into Christmas, Dodgers prevailed 5-2 over Cardinals — having dropped  their  first game of the season 7-4 last week to the same team.

However, it was Cardinals — whose only losses have been against Dodgers — who  took the lead first in this match.

Lead-off hitter Will Bathgate gave Cardinals a 1-0 lead with an automatic home run, before Dodgers responded straight away.

Jake Burtenshaw and Matt Watts both scored to give Dodgers a lead  they  would not relinquish.

Watts extended that to 3-1 in the third, before Jacob Burnett added a fourth for Dodgers in the fourth.

Cardinals hit back in the fifth via  Bathgate, but Dodgers responded with a Callum Rowley home run to restore the three-run margin.

Earlier in the day, Dodgers claimed an 18-4 win over Old Boys, while Cardinals won by default against Ellis Park.

Meanwhile, the Spartens women emerged victorious in the battle of the two best all-women’s teams.

They beat Immortalz 10-5 to finish the highest of the five women’s teams playing in the 10-team pre-Christmas senior reserve non-competitive grade.

The second innings was key, as the Spartens piled on six runs to take a big lead.

Immortalz managed one of their own, through Jackie Padman, before adding a further three in the third to bring the score back to 6-4.

Lisa Matheson and Sophie Te Tana scored twice each in the fourth and fifth, while Immortalz could only manage one further run.
