Dunstan had the top duo, but Logan Park claimed overall honours.

To do so, both had to topple last year's champions at yesterday's southern region secondary schools petanque tournament

Dunstan High School's Josh Booth and Felix Schaap combined to win the event at Dunedin City Petanque club.

They edged Bayfield High School duo Andre Carrick and Jackson Gallagher.

It was Logan Park High School that dominated from there down though.

Six of the next seven places were filled by its teams.

Several games take place at once.

That enabled it to finish on 17 team points, edging Dunstan (14) and Bayfield (8).

The tournament, held annually since 2006, was in its second year at the club.

It attracted 34 doubles teams from six different schools.

Included in those were five from Dunstan, who travelled to Dunedin and stayed the night for the event.

While a serious tournament, half the field consisted of players who had not played before.

However, given the simple nature of the rules and the team of helpers on hand,
they were able to fit in after their first game.

Junior and senior school leagues are held in the first and fourth terms of each year.

It is hoped many of the new players will be interested in joining.
