Forwards Conner Jean and Maxwell Macharg made sure the Southern Stampede walked away with two wins from their first National Ice Hockey League home games at the weekend.

The Southern Stampede beat the Red Devils 5-3 in front of their home crowd in Queenstown on Friday.

The home side scored all five of their goals in the second period after a Conner Jean brace, and followed by goals to Lachlan Frear, Stefan Amston and Jack Robbie.

But it was a closer affair on Saturday with the Red Devils leading 3-2 in the final period.

Jean, assisted by Jordan Challis and Lachlan Frear, slotted home the equaliser to send the game into overtime.

And then Maxwell Macharg made sure the defending champions secured the points when he banged home a nice shot, assisted by Max Roth.

The Dunedin Thunder beat the Botany Swarm 6-2 on Saturday.

Luke Stegmann scored twice, while Chris Eaden, Cole Beckstead, Ian Audas and Samuel Loiselle added one each.

The Swarm though got revenge yesterday, winning the second fixture 5-4.

The Swarm shot out to a 5-1 lead early in the second period, and although the Thunder finished strongly, adding a second goal for Eaden as well as unanswered third period goals for Audas and Loiselle, they could not quite haul the Swarm in.

In the New Zealand women’s league, the Dunedin Thunder lost 4-2 to the Canterbury Inferno in Christchurch on Saturday.

Lyani Goodman scored twice unassisted, while Gabrielle Guerin scored twice for Canterbury.

But the Thunder must have had a pretty good night’s sleep, because they came back to the rink yesterday to blow the Inferno away 8-2.

Abbey Heale netted twice for the Thunder, and Jacinta Hoglund, Kate Vernal, Camryn Linton, Manuella Pedrosa, Goodman and Jessica Ryall all joined her on a crowded score sheet.
