Freeskiing specialist Mitchey Greig (20) outpaced some of New Zealand's best female alpine skiers to win the giant slalom at the second race in the Wanaka FIS tech racing series yesterday.

Greig, a member of the New Zealand Freeski Team, has met Winter Olympic qualifying standards for skier-X, a discipline in which skiers race down a BMX track-like course.

However, she was racing the clock on the Treble Cone giant slalom course yesterday, winning in a combined time of 1min 30.29sec.

Greig's win yesterday came four days after she finished fourth in the giant slalom at Cardrona.

Her time edged New Zealand alpine ski team member Allie McGlinn, of Queenstown, into second place by .53sec.

McGlinn's set the day's fastest time (43.81sec) on her first run but lost concentration on her second and dropped 4sec, allowing Greig to sneak in for the win.

Aucklander Lucie Tait-Jamieson was unable to repeat her giant slalom win from Monday at her home training base of Cardrona Alpine Resort and finished third with a combined time of 1min 32.03sec.

Taylor Rapley, of Queenstown, was next in 1min 32.31sec, as New Zealand women claimed the first four spots.

New Zealand's top male alpine skier, Ben Griffin, of Ohakune, continued his recent imperious form at FIS level to win the giant slalom in a combined time of 1min 28.53sec, from Norwegian Halfdan Falkum-Hansen (1min 28.76sec).
