Losses for NZ teams in Games warm-ups

The Black Sticks women lost 5-1 against Germany in their final game of the Four Nations Tournament in the Netherlands and the men were beaten 3-2 by the host team in a practice game in Utrecht overnight.

The women's loss meant that Germany won the tournament, with the Black Sticks finishing second based on goal difference, South Africa coming third and Belgium placing fourth.

In last night's game, New Zealand conceded two goals in the first half, and the third ranked Germans stretched their lead to 3-0 in the 40th minute.

A goal-mouth scramble saw Charlotte Harrison tap the ball to the back of the net, but Germany scored twice more and took the game out of reach.

"It was a very disappointing performance. We turned the ball over too much and this made our job of defending very difficult," said coach Mark Hager.

The women now go to the Olympic village where they will spend two days training before the play a friendly game against France later this week.

Meanwhile, the Black Sticks men lost 3-2 in their second unofficial practice match against the Netherlands in Utrecht.

"There were elements of the game that were pleasing, but our turnover rate was high. Overall, it was a much better performance than our first game against Holland," said Shane McLeod.

New Zealand scored in the third minute from the first penalty corner of the game, thanks to a Richard Petherick drag flick.

The third ranked Dutch side scored two field goals before halftime taking their advantage to 2-1, and then found the net once more early in the second half when they converted a penalty corner.

The Black Sticks put the pressure on in the last 15 minutes and pulled one back with five minutes left on the clock. Auckland's Simon Child skilfully eliminated players on the baseline, finding Wellington's Blair Hilton on the right hand post who knocked it in.

The men will depart for the Olympic village in a couple of days where they will train on the Olympic turf and play practice games against Great Britain and Spain.
