Multisport: 57 teams chase adventure

Endurance athlete Josh Harris has taken a temporary break from competing to organise an adventure race he hopes will become an annual event.

He launches the Dunedin adventure challenge today.

It is a rogaine-style two-person event which starts and finishes at Forsyth Barr Stadium. The event caters to everyone from novice to elite athletes.

The aim of the race is to collect as many points in the four hours available by finding checkpoints, each worth a different number of points, depending on how difficult they are to reach.

It has proved popular and 57 teams of two have entered the event.

"There will be over 100 people racing, plus however many spectators turn up, so it should be a good day," Harris said.

People from all walks of life have entered "but in the main, people have entered in the intermediate section, so just your normal mums and dads".

Harris, who competed in the Godzone adventure race recently, believes there is room for another adventure-style event on the calendar.

"It opens people up to rogaining and learning how to push their limits a bit further.

"I just wanted to get people involved in adventure racing and increase the awareness about the sport.

"I'm a big believer in getting out into the wilderness and just enjoying it and it is kind of a way to get people involved that might not have thought of it before."

The major prize - a new Mazda CX5 for the week - might have enticed a few people to get up off the couch, as well.
