Heavy lifting was needed to achieve success in the South Island bench press championships at the Valley Strength and Conditioning gym in Kaikorai on Saturday.

To win the overall men's prize Cantabrian Ben Jamieson had to hoist 188.5kg, and set a New Zealand Masters 2 record in the process.

In the women's event, another Cantabrian, Robyn Hall, had to match her personal best of 82.5kg to take gold.

Meanwhile, veteran Christchurch lifter Terry Pierson lifted a New Zealand Masters 3 record of 133kg to win his division.

"This is my 42nd year of competing in these championships; I'm 60 now," Pierson said.

"I'm really chuffed with what I've done today."
