Wanaka freeskier Jossi Wells is aiming for gold at the world's premier extreme sports festival, the Winter X Games, which begin tomorrow morning (NZ time).

Wells (19) claimed a silver medal at the halfpipe freeski competition event last year, in one of the best performances by a New Zealander on the international snowsports stage.

He will be joined at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado, by younger brother Byron (16), who secured an invitation to compete at the event last month.

The brothers share the honours as the youngest competitors to gain invitations - Jossi was also 16 when he made his first appearance at the event.

New Zealand snowboarding teams are also in action this weekend, at the Korean World Cup event.

Competitors will by vying for valuable FIS points and rankings a year out from selection for the Winter Olympics.

Wanaka snowboarder Julianne Bray is a top contender for the New Zealand women's team, and will be joined by fellow Wanaka rider Kendall Brown and Paula Mitchell, of Queenstown.

Taupo snowboarder Rebecca Sinclair will also compete at the World Cup, after she turned down an invitation to the X Games halfpipe competition to wear the silver fern at the FIS snowboarding event.

Wanaka-based New Zealand No 1 snowboarder James Hamilton, of Auckland, will lead the men's team, supported by Queenstown's Ben Stewart, and Mitchell Brown, also of Wanaka.

NZ Snowsports chief executive Ross Palmer said the appearance of so many of New Zealand's best snowsports athletes on the international stage on the same weekend was unprecedented.

"It's fantastic. Hopefully, we will have all of our athletes peaking at the right time as we approach selection for next year's Winter Olympics [in Vancouver]."
