Softball: Former White Sox coach to hold programme

Former White Sox coach and player Naomi Shaw will hold a coaching programme in Dunedin starting on Friday.

Among other modules, the programme will feature a pitching and catching session, a hitting and short-game skills module and a mental skills session.

Shaw coached the White Sox from 2010 to 2014, and also guided Hutt Valley to six national provincial titles during the 2000s.

Before taking over as head coach, she was assistant coach from 1992 to 1998, and was also a national selector for eight years from 1991.

Shaw also played for the White Sox for more than a decade, and was captain of the side when it won the world championship in 1982.

The coaching programme will be a welcome boost to softball in Dunedin, which is struggling with just two teams - Cardinals and Dodgers - in its premier league this season.

Otago Softball development manager Michael Coutts said it was a ''really good'' opportunity for people to gain some coaching qualifications.

''Hopefully, everyone gets tucked into it,'' he said.

''There are limited spaces. At the moment, there is still enough space for people to get enrolled and get involved in the course.''

The course, at Otago Softball's headquarters on Frasers Rd, will run from 4.30pm to 8.30pm on Friday, and 9am to 4.15pm on Sunday.

People interested in registering can contact Coutts at osainc@vodafone.co.nz.
