Kate Godfrey and Tame Govaerts were the pick of a golden bunch at the South Island championships in Dunedin.

The three-day meet wrapped up at Moana Pool last night, with Otago swimmers winning 40 gold, 21 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Godfrey (21) snared nine gold and a silver over the three days and was a big reason why Neptune romped to the club title with 1258.5 points.

She won gold in the 50m and 100m backstroke, 100m, 200m and 400m individual medley, 50m, 200m and 400m freestyle and 100m butterfly, and silver in the 50m butterfly.

The 100m backstroke final was particularly close, with Godfrey just holding on to beat Ebony Maikuku, of Christchurch, by 0.65sec.

It was a continuation of Godfrey's good recent form, after she broke four Otago records at the national short course championships in Auckland last month.

Govaerts (16) picked up where he left off at the national secondary school championships in Auckland earlier this month with another stack of medals.

He won five gold medals in Auckland, but bettered that with nine gold and two silver at Moana Pool.

The King's High School pupil won the boys 15-16 years 50m and 100m and 200m freestyle, 50m and 200m breaststroke, 50m and 100m backstroke, and the 200m individual medley and 200m breaststroke.

He was second in the 50m butterfly and 100m individual medley.

The Zenith swimmer also broke three South Island 16 years records, in the 200m individual medley (2min 7.70sec), 200m freestyle (1min 55.53sec) and 200m breaststroke (2min 20.10sec).

Courtland Ellis also set a South Island record in the 100m individual medley (59.25sec).

Cameron James (21) was involved in perhaps the race of the meet, when he and Christchurch's William Campbell could not be separated in the men's 17 and over 100m butterfly.

The pair touched the wall at the same time in 56.75sec to share the gold medal. JeremyTasker was only 0.06sec behind on his way to silver.

James finished the three days with three other gold medals - 400m individual medley and 50m and 100m backstroke - while also winning silver in the 200m individual medley and 200m backstroke.

Devon Familton (15), of Neptune, also had a good three days, winning four gold, two silver and one bronze.

She won the 15-16 years 50m and 200m breaststroke and the 50m and 100m backstroke. She was second in the 100m and 200m individual medley, and third in the 100m breaststroke.

Other Otago swimmers to win at least one medal were: Meg Sycamore, Matthew Glassford, Kou Kitahara, Nicole Heaton, Olivia Gold, Gabrielle Trotter, Nick Pryde, Tandia Gooch, Isabella Gold, Courtland Ellis, Jeremy Tasker, Jack Divers, Alanah Charlton, Molly Woodham, Jessica Scott and Ben Carr.

Caitlin Deans and Cecilia Crooks both recorded a bunch of personal bests at the Australian state team age-group short-course championships in Canberra at the weekend.

Deans finished third in the girls 15-16 years 800m freestyle (8min 44.84sec), fourth in the 400m freestyle (4min 55.65sec), seventh in the 200m freestyle(2min 3.31sec) and eighth in the 400m individual medley (4min 55.65sec). She recorded personal bests in all four events, while her time in the 800m freestyle extended her Otago age group record by 1.54sec.

Crooks also recorded personal best times in the four events she entered.

She finished 10th in the 13-14 years 400m individual medley (5min 9.80sec), 12th in the 400m freestyle (4min 27.81sec), 13th in the 800m freestyle (9min 14.74sec) and 15th in the 200m individual medley (2min 28.28sec).
