Volleyball: Scorpions secure NZ division two title

Dunedin club Scorpions was a comprehensive winner of the division two women's title at the national club championships in Nelson at the weekend.

The team played six games during the tournament and won all six 3-0.

After defeating Nelson, Rotorua, New Zealand Defence Forces and Northland in section play, Scorpions met Eastern Angels from Christchurch.

All aspects of its play improved significantly and it had a comfortable 25-13, 25-15, 25-18 win to move through to the final against Tauranga B.

The Tauranga team had easily beaten Nelson in the other semifinal.

Scorpions maintained the standard it produced in the semifinal and was dominant in all aspects of the game. The final score was 25-20, 25-15, 25-3.

Service reception and passing was accurate, which enabled setter Stacey Costain to direct play.

She was supported by all the hitters, who put the opposition under constant pressure.

Louise Brazier was outstanding, hitting with precision from both front court and back court.

Tauranga focused its attack on the open, but effective blocking from Scorpions reduced the effect of this avenue and Tauranga was unable to utilise any other effective attack.

In the second set, Scorpions' serving was erratic but this was remedied in the final set, putting Tauranga's reception under pressure.
