There is a lot to be said for loyalty at the top of the racing world and Wingatui jockey Jake Lowry hopes to reward such trust in today's $230,000 Coupland's Bakeries Mile at Riccarton.

Riverton trainer Kelvin Tyler has stuck with Lowry for the group 2 1600m after Lowry guided Timy Tyler to a group 3 Winter Cup win in early August - the biggest result in both Tyler's and Lowry's career.

The pair were successful again in the Coupland's Mile trial at Riccarton last month, and Lowry is thrilled to stay on the son of No Excuse Needed.

''I'm just thankful that he has enough trust in me,'' Lowry said.

Tyler's trust is understandable - after all, Lowry and Timy Tyler have combined for three wins from five starts, including an impressive effort in the Mile Trial.

''To be fair, the [good3] track probably wasn't to suit,'' Lowry said.

''He had to do a wee bit of work early to get round and get in a nice position outside the leader.

'' I expected he would need the run and he might run a nice placing. That he won is pretty good going forward and he's got a lot of improvement in him.''

Lowry sees no reason why the 5yr-old gelding cannot continue to step up, even against a very classy field today.

''In the time I've rode him, every start I believe he's gone better - except for the start over 1800m which was probably an afterthought,'' he said.

''In the Winter Cup he improved quite a bit, and first start back he went up another step.''

Lowry has huge respect for the top three in the race book - Addictive Habit, Mighty Solomon and Allez Eagle - and Nashville, Platinum Witness and Ringo will also have their supporters.

''They're a bit above average. It's a true challenge, but I think he's up with them,'' Lowry said.

With quality thoroughbreds scattered throughout the field, Timy Tyler is at $12 in the final-field market.

''That's about where he should be at. I think he's value for money for me, but it's a pretty good field.''

Crucially, Timy Tyler will carry only 54.5kg, the same weight he hauled to victory in the Winter Cup, although today he will start from a wider barrier of 10.

''He's not very big, so as much as weight as you can get off him helps him a little bit,'' Lowry said.

''It's a bit of a tricky barrier but a couple outside will be keen to go forward so we will see what happens.''

Lowry's only other ride on the day is on Itemize in race 1, who debuted with a fourth at Wingatui on October 22.

''He's improved plenty from last start - he should go a bold race,'' he said.

''He's still learning but he has a lot of ability. We think a bit of him.''
