The 9yr-old pacing mare has been retired by her connections, Brian Anderton and the estate of Bryan ''Mouse'' Kennedy.
The Washington VC mare had an interrupted career, but ended up with eight wins from 26 starts for $67,405 in stakes earnings.
New Years Jay was with Otago trainer Amber Hoffman for much of her career before she was sent north to Barry Purdon's Clevedon stables this winter.
She rounded out her career with a win at Alexandra Park in late July, but Anderton said the mare was still not quite right.
''Barry just felt that ever since he had her, she was just never 100% behind,'' he said.
''She would gallop away all right but in the cart, she didn't feel dead right. I said we can soon fix that - we'll send her to the stallion.''
Anderton said New Years Jay is at the top of the list for standardbreds he raced with Kennedy.
''The best was Nero's Jay - he won 87 races - but she was the best one we've actually raced.''
Nero's Jay won two races out of three in 1988 before being exported to Australia.
The Anderton and Kennedy families have gained a lot of satisfaction out of racing New Years Jay, making trips to many tracks around the South Island to watch her race.
''Mouse was a special friend and he was apprenticed with Dad,'' he said.
''We all worked together and he worked for me later on.
Anderton said Kennedy's widow Sandra and the Kennedy family had been enjoyed the success with the mare.
New Years Jay was first across the line on debut at Forbury Park in June 2012 when trained by Darryn Simpson, but was disqualified for galloping for more than 150m immediately after the start.
After two years away from racing due to filling in a leg, she proved she was far better than maiden quality with a 10¼ length win for Hoffman when she trained in partnership with Jonny Cox. The following season produced six wins from 11 starts including a 1.54.6 win over a mile at Ashburton in February last year.
Anderton and the Kennedys have New Years Jay's half-sister, Delightful Jay (by Bettor's Delight), and Kath's Finale, a 3yr-old Bettor's Delight-Kathleen Jay filly, as racing prospects for the near future.
