Racing: Barron's trip north with mare pays off

A trip north paid dividends for Christy Breanna with a bonus on the way back home at Forbury Park on Thursday night.

Her trainer, Tony Barron, owns the mare, so, being a canny horseman, thought he would add to her broodmare potential by time-trialling her at Ashburton a fortnight ago.

The result was a 1.51.7 mile time to her name, which made Barron's decision to send her north well worthwhile.

Christy Breanna is one of several handy progeny out of the Holmes Hanover mare Holmes Dream. Others include 2008 Tasmania Cup winner Bold Cruiser, Live Basically (four New Zealand wins) and 2008 Nevele R Fillies winner Badlands Jewel (8 wins).

Christy Breanna rounded out her northern sojourn from Barron's Makarewa establishment by running a meritorious sixth in a quickly-run race at Rangiora on Sunday.

''She went super and she's gone very good tonight,'' Barron said on Thursday. That means the daughter of Lis Mara has earned herself another trip to Addington next Saturday.

''She'll have to head back up next week now. There's a c1 stand for her next week, so we'll have a crack at that.''

Thursday's win was penalty-free, meaning the mare stays in the c1 grade.
