Orange (34) is the sister of leading harness racing driver Blair Orange, who is enjoying a stellar season in the sulky with 110 wins.
Candice Orange, by contrast, has gained her class B thoroughbred training licence only this season, but scored with Midnight Cappa in a 1400m maiden - only her 10th starter on race day.
"Now she has had the taste of victory, she will not be letting the licence lapse any time soon. Then you have the brother-sister rivalry,'' Orange said.
''It's unreal how good he's going - he's pretty amazing in what he does.
''Blair's always been the harness boy and I've been the one that's wanted to ride them.''
Orange has been riding thoroughbreds in work for the best part of 18 years.
She began riding work for Canterbury trainers Tony and Lyn Prendergast before riding work across New Zealand for trainers such as Trevor and Stephen McKee and Mark Walker. She rode work on multiple group 1 winner Princess Coup, and also spent time working in Japan.
''It's been pretty amazing,'' she said "I had the privilege to ride some really top horses and I still ride.''
Orange mixes in her training with trackwork for North Canterbury trainers Michael and Tarsha Stokes and Steven Woodsford but decided to branch out into training earlier this season.
''I do all the work myself with riding them and stuff like that - you do it for everyone else and I thought, 'Why don't I do it myself?','' she said.
''It's not easy. It's a hard game so hence why I still ride for everyone else. I've had a lot of support from family and everyone, and people that I have worked for. People believe in me so I just do it - I love it.''
Orange hopes to attract more horses to her base at Rangiora over the next 12 months.
''I'll just carry on doing what I do, working from dawn to darkness. Hopefully, I just keep progressing and making something of myself a bit more.''
