Racing: Cox can add to tally

Katie Cox has proven herself to be an able student, but it is a horse named Can't Teach That that she has put at the top of her three drives at Forbury Park tonight.

Cox (23) graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in property valuation and management from Lincoln University last year, but is giving the world of harness racing a go before she considers stepping in to the corporate world.

''What I really want to do is make a go of the horses,'' Cox said.

''That's the plan for now, give it the best shot I can and give it 110%.''

Cox was involved in showjumping and the sport horse community when she was a teenager, but some time with Colin and Julie De Filippi helped her catch the harness racing bug.

She spent time working for Burnham trainer Jamie Gameson and has now been with Ladbrooks trainer Dean Taylor for just over a year.

''I'm lucky to work for someone like Dean. He's fantastic to work for and gives me good opportunities.''

Cox has collected 11 wins in three seasons of driving, with four of those victories coming at Forbury Park. She hopes Can't Teach That can add to her tally in the junior drivers' handicap pace tonight.

The Bettor's Delight mare competed against some of the better North Island fillies in her 3yr-old season, but impressed Cox in her first start as a Taylor-trained horse at Addington last week, finishing fifth but less than two lengths behind the winner, Glamar Girls.

''I was really happy with her,'' Cox said.

''To sit parked - although I know it was a slower middle section - she still has gone a good race to do that first up.''

A small concern could be the barrier draw of 1 at the 2700m standing start.

''From a stand, you rely on getting away on the right foot, but she's been pretty safe so far in the workouts and in that race the other day.

''But there are a couple in there that go pretty good.''

Cox is keen to partner up with Flyin Sue in the coming months, starting with the 3yr-old filly's debut in the 1700m pace tonight. The daughter of Elsu qualified with a win at Ashburton on December 10, going almost 6 seconds under the required time.

''She qualified well but that was from a mobile, so a stand is another thing.

''But she has gone away in a workout from a stand. The biggest thing from that will be the start - over 1700m it's pretty vital.''

Cowboy (race 7) behaved himself at his debut at Forbury Park in March, but could have done with a lasso after his second start 10 days later at Motukarara when he broke and took no part.

''He's had a couple of quiet runs back at the workouts and the trials, and they've been good runs without asking him to do much at all.''

His antics at Motukarara earned him a spot off the unruly, but that could suit Cowboy's racing pattern.

''He does seem to come off the back and have one go at them and he does have a bit of a sprint on him.''
