Equine Vets of New Zealand has recommended Caco Iron Copper not be used in performance horses.
Following "informal discussion" at its recent annual meeting, "it is considered prudent that members consider not using the product Caco Iron Copper in performance horses", Murray Brightwell, of EVNZ, said.
"We recommend this until issues of detection and the potential significance of arsenic and its metabolites with regards to perceived performance enhancement, and hence its status as a prohibited substance, are resolved."
Delightful Christian, who had been treated with Caco Iron Copper, returned a positive to arsenic. The urine sample had been tested in Hong Kong where sophisticated equipment can detect low levels of prohibited substances.
