Buying at the yearling sales - some trainers swear by it, while others don't like the long-term risk factor. How successful is it to buy at the sales - be it thoroughbred or standardbred? Matt Smith went through the top 10 lots at the 2012 yearling sales in both codes, with the class of 2012 now rising 5yr-olds. The results may surprise.

THOROUGHBREDS:
King's Rock (Fastnet Rock-Nureyev's Girl colt), $1,750,000:
David Ellis purchase at Karaka, King's Rock began his career with a win on debut at Te Rapa as an early 3yr-old.

Last seen running second at Ellerslie in October. Trialled at Cambridge in May.

Packing Chaparral (High Chaparral-La Souvenir colt), $800,000:
Trained by Ken and Bev Kelso, the bay gelding has won once and had four runner-up cheques from seven starts.

Ran sixth at Te Rapa earlier this month.

Jewels Gift (Stravinsky-Jesmonds Gift filly), $740,000:
Owned by Sir Patrick and Lady Justine Hogan, the filly is still to come back at the head of the field, with a second placing her best effort from six starts.

Asscher (Stravinsky-Marquise filly), $675,000:
Unplaced twice in late 2012 before being exported to Australia. Yet to salute after five starts at New South Wales tracks such as Wyong, Gosford and Newcastle.

Triumph For All (High Chaparral-Creil colt), $650,000:
 Hong Kong-owned, and sent there to race, but yet to line up at a meeting.

Forever Loved (High Chaparral-Diamond Like filly), $650,000:
Forever Loved has done better than the rest of the top 10, winning the group 2 Blazer Stakes at Flemington in October and winning twice as a 3yr-old the season prior. She also placed fourth in the Australian Oaks behind Rising Romance. Earned $310,000 to date.

Joy Of Life (Zabeel-La Quinta Gold filly), $600,000:
The Peter and Dawn Williams-trained 4yr-old won over a mile at Ellerslie in February, capping off a tidy summer campaign. Has placed three times, too.

Casquets (Fastnet Rock-Suitely filly), $570,000:
 Casquets has had just four starts, but prevailed at Flemington in the listed 2013 Tallindert Stakes. Hasn't raced since April last year.

Unnamed O'Reilly-Petit Verdot filly, $550,000:
 Bought by Mulcaster Bloodstock, the bay has not been sighted on race day.

Unnamed O'Reilly-Lafleur colt, $460,000:
 Not sighted on race day.

TOP OF THE CROP:
Boys:

Puccini (Encosta De Lago-Miss Opera colt) - Passed in at $150,000 with a reserve of $180,000. Has won $963,763 including the NZ Derby, the Thorndon Mile and three group 2 guineas races.

Girls: Lucia Valentina (Savabeel-Staryn Glenn filly) - Bought for $60,000 by Bruce Perry for Wellington owner Lib Pategna, she had a productive 2014, claiming the group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes and Turnbull Stakes and scoring thirds in the Australian Oaks and Caulfield Cup, for earnings of A$1,229,095 to date.

STANDARDBREDS:
Carters Cullen (Christian Cullen-Fight Fire With Fire colt), $250,000:
 Originally named Big Boys Don't Cry, Carters Cullen was bought by Cran Dalgety at the Auckland sales.

Seven trials and workouts for Dalgety as a 2 and 3yr-old and last seen running sixth at the Ashburton trials in April last year for Tim Butt.

Ultimate CC (Christian Cullen-T K Swift filly), $135,000:
Won three of 15 when trained by Mark Jones. Was exported to Australia after winning at Addington in May last year.

Won twice for Geoff Webster before transferring to David Murphy.

Martine Maguire (Christian Cullen-Unrehearsed filly), $115,000:
Bought by Gareth Dixon, the sister to Lizzie Maguire had 11 starts between March 2013 and October 2014 - with all but two of them for Steven Reid and/or Simon McMullan. Her win came at Cambridge as a 2yr-old.

Melody Bromac (Christian Cullen-Missy Matao filly), $100,000:
Renamed Strawberry Miss, she has won two from 23 with both wins coming since she joined Sean McCaffrey's team at Cambridge, including a win at Cambridge last month.

Meticulous (Christian Cullen-Syriana colt), $100,000:
Joined Mark Purdon's team, and has thrived, picking up nine wins along with two placings in group races in Southland earlier this year and has earned back his price with $1000 or so to spare.

BB Jones (Gotta Go Cullen-Beauty Bee colt), $100,000:
Bought by Cullen Breeding, the gelding now named Got A Beauty is with Don Ross at Broadfield.

Best result from eight starts is a third at Cromwell in January.

Stunin Dude (Christian Cullen-Vicario colt), $90,000:
 Bought by Tim Butt, but has spent time with Robert Dunn and now Graham and Paul Court. Winner of just one from nine, but another victory is not far off judging by his form.

Hawkeye Bromac (Mach Three-Humminbird colt), $90,000:
 Lincoln Farms bought this colt and he was up and running with wins at 2 and 3 before being exported to Western Australia, where he has won five more times.

Nico Maguire (Art Major-Moscardon colt), $90,000:
Renamed General Stride, he was exported to Australia just two months later. Has won at Newcastle and Penrith in New South Wales for just over $13,000 in prize money.

Franco Hadrian (Mach Three-Hunter Franco colt), $86,000:
Regulus, as he is now known, is a success story, earning more than $100,000 from 30 starts with Cran Dalgety, including six wins. Picked up good money through the sales series races and won a feature 3yr-old race at Alexandra Park in late 2013.

Boys:
Sky Major (Art Major-Sky Beauty colt) The $50,000 price tag on Sky Major looks a bargain now. He's won $745,189 including an unprecedented three Harness Jewels and this year's New Zealand Messenger and Chariots Of Fire.

Girls: Venus Serena (Mach Three-Inspiring Dash filly) Bought back by her breeders, Bob and Jenny Sandford, for $37,500, Venus Serena is on the cusp of $800,000 lifetime earnings, courtesy of seven group 1 wins.
