Racing: Otago meeting abandoned

The Otago Greyhound Racing Club meeting scheduled for Tuesday has been abandoned because of insufficient nominations, the result of a boycott by Canterbury trainers.

"There were only 46 nominations, enough for five races, and we called the meeting off," John Carlyle, the manager of the OGRC, said.

Prominent Canterbury trainers boycotted the meeting last Tuesday. The club proceeded with an eight-race programme instead of the planned 15 races.

The boycott is a protest against a selection policy for compiling fields. Preference is given to dogs that did not start on the Thursday or Friday of the previous week.

"We have invited the leaders of the protest to a round-table discussion but so far they have declined," Carlyle said.

"It is a very uncertain situation for future meetings." Jim Leitch, the general manager of Greyhound New Zealand, said a meeting at an alternative venue would not be staged as a replacement.

"I understand there is discussion to be held between the parties in an attempt to resolve the situation," he said.
