A Southland galloper will soon be in the stables of one of the most high-profile trainers in Australia after the sale of Bigglesworth to Sydney.

The son of One Cool Cat has won one of his six starts for Invercargill trainer Sally McKay, who bought him as a weanling for $1700 in 2010.

Bigglesworth is to join Gai Waterhouse's stable after a deal was confirmed yesterday. The horse will leave for Sydney next Thursday.

The effervescent Waterhouse has trained more than 100 group 1 winners including 2010 Metropolitan winner Herculian Prince, who is by the White Robe Lodge stallion Yamanin Vital.

Bigglesworth looked like he would eat up the longer distances as soon as McKay got him into training and she expects Waterhouse will be looking down the same path with him.

''I presume they're buying him in as a stayer as in a year or so. He'll be a lovely staying type,'' she said.

McKay was happy to make it clear the horse was for sale after he broke maidens at Omakau. He was bought by Kevin Strong of Invercargill, who left the horse in McKay's care until after the Southland Guineas on February 16 in which he finished third. A large offer came from bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo with a view to the horse going to Hong Kong, but after negotiations stalled, Cataldo then offered him to Waterhouse.

McKay declined to reveal the sale price, other than it was ''very, very good money''.

''I'm happy with my result out of it and the owner is extremely happy with his six or seven weeks' ownership. He will reinvest into the racing industry. He'll go and get another galloper, and he's got a few standardbreds as well.''
