Diverse journey from Canada to final

Morgan Walker used to be a ballerina. Used to play golf. Now she hits rucks and makes as many tackles as possible.

She has even started a programme to get more people into the game.

Walker (22) will turn out for Pirates in today's women's club final against University at Forsyth Barr Stadium, part of a journey which has been varied and taken many turns.

Walker is Canadian and has washed up in Dunedin through the love of the game and wanting to do a bit of exploring.

She was a typical Canadian girl growing up and had a go at all sports.

"I wanted to play everything but then in middle school in year 7 I had a go at rugby. Rugby was pretty new but I immediately fell in love with it and have played it ever since," she said.

"I just love the physical stuff, the tackling, the mauls, everything about it, really."

Growing up she also played golf to a decent level and did ballet.

But those pursuits took a back seat and were eventually dropped for rugby.

Being keen on the game she naturally enough wanted to spread her wings and travelled to Oamaru last year. She played for the North Otago women's team and was good enough to make the Otago Spirit, playing as a utility forward.

She moved to Dunedin this year and linked with Pirates.

She comes from the city of Abbotsford which is right on the border of Canada and the United States, close to Vancouver.

"I like Dunedin. It is similar to back home. Not too small but not too big."

She is studying applied sports science at Otago Polytechnic and is also doing some work at Kavanagh College as a sports co-ordinator.

She is keen to spread her love of the game and has instigated a programme to help grow the game.

"I saw a gap that needed to be filled with schoolgirls' rugby and since then I have created fun rugby skills workshops called the RW6 series composed of six different rugby specific programmes for girls between 12-18."

The Otago union fully supports the programme, and girls can now sign up, she said. The first workshop will be at Montecillo on August 8.

As for the final today it will be a tough one to call.

The sides have met only once this season with Pirates prevailing although not by a lot. The other scheduled game did not happen after confusion led to no referee turning up.

Pirates has plenty of experience and a good core while University is younger and has some solid forwards.

The students will miss flanker Georgia Mason, who is out with a knee injury. The game kicks off at 2.15pm, at Forsyth Barr Stadium.
