Five into four does not go.

Someone has to miss out and that someone might well be the loser of tomorrow's game between Taieri and Green Island.

The struggle for that fourth playoff spot is heating up. Just five points separate the top five teams with four rounds remaining.

Every game is important from here on in but the battle of the saddle shapes as a defining match for both sides.

Taieri has been steadily climbing the ladder and is nestled in second on 47 points.

But the Eels have a tough finish. They host Green Island and have a bye next weekend.

They finish the round-robin with matches against co-defending champions Harbour and University.

University is the red-hot favourite to win the competition following its 53-0 win against Harbour.

The Hawks will be hurting but they have lost only three times this season and two of those losses have been to University.

Taieri is going to have to win at least one of its three remaining games to make the playoffs and Green Island shapes as its best opportunity.

The Grizzlies are in third place with 45 points. They also have three games left but have a much easier run.

After Taieri they play Alhambra-Union and Dunedin - two comfortable wins if form is an accurate guide.

Harbour leads the standings with 48 points. The Hawks will probably increase their tally with a win against AU at the North Ground tomorrow. But the games against Kaikorai and Taieri are considerably more difficult.

University (44 points) and Kaikorai (43 points) have four games remaining so they are playing for more points than the other playoff contenders.

University hosts the struggling Zingari-Richmond tomorrow - there is an easy five points.

If that game goes as most would predict, then the Bookworms will need to win just one of their remaining games against Southern, Kaikorai and Taieri.

If they play like they did last week, they will win all three.

Ink University in for a playoff spot.

Kaikorai sits just outside the top four but that extra game they get to play - yes, they actually play one more game than everyone else - might get them across the line.

The eight other teams got four points for the extra bye but Kaikorai started the season playing for a maximum of 80 points, the other eight were playing for 79.

Kaikorai hosts Dunedin and that looks infinitely winnable.

The games against Harbour and University - not-so-much.

Its prospect could come down to the last round-robin game against Zingari-Richmond and that should be a slam dunk.

So that brings us back to the match between Taieri and Green Island. Both sides will need to push all their chips in.

Of course, there is always the chance AU, Dunedin or Zingari-Richmond will play spoiler.
