But before the 22-year-old University midfielder returns home, he is hopeful he can help guide his club side into the playoffs.
University posted a 71-14 win over Zingari-Richmond at Logan Park on Saturday.
The win has kept them in the hunt with one round robin game remaining.
They are one point behind Green Island (sixth place) and two points behind Harbour (fifth).
Those two teams play each other at Logan Park, so the door is firmly open for University.
There is the added complication of the points for the bye, which will be awarded at the end of the round.
University could slip into the playoffs even if they lose to Kaikorai.
But the safest route is to win that game, and that is the major focus for Harris.
"We’re in for a tough game but I think we can do it," he said.
Kaikorai beat the students 40-14 in May.
"We had a horrible game against them last time, but we’re a different team now.
"That was probably our worst week, and from then we’ve been building."
Should University miss out on the playoffs, it could end up being Harris’ last game in Dunedin.
He was born and raised in Japan, and is returning on a two-year deal with the Steelers.
But he has New Zealand heritage and is armed with a degree in finance from the University of Otago.
"I did my finance degree and I was honestly looking forward to getting into that field this year or next year, but obviously this gig came through.
"So I’m going to have a crack at this for a couple of years and see where it takes me."
Harris has played at a good level while in New Zealand. He was one of five Otago University players who toured Japan with the New Zealand Universities team recently.
He has also been involved in the Otago development team and the Bravehearts.
But his family live in Japan, and he is looking forward to returning in August and seeing what he is capable of in the Top League.
The other two final round-robin games are good match-ups as well.
Taieri host Southern — who have Mackenzie Palmer playing his 100th game — and will qualify in pole position if they win that fixture, while Zingari-Richmond will host Alhambra-Union in the bottom-of-the-table clash.
They are both out of playoff contention, but the game will most certainly have meaning. It is an opportunity for the battlers to finish the season on a positive note.
